Elena

My eyes flutter open upon Anna, my head resting in her lap and my head aching. Was I dreaming? Did I hit my head or something? Then, the events leading to my sudden slumber come back to me and I widen my eyes, quickly noticing that my hands are bound together by a thick rope. Anna's gentle touches brush over my shoulder and I flinch from the pain radiating from the back of my head; however, I can't reach it. Scanning around the room nervously, I take in my surroundings. I'm in a study with bookcases lining the walls, and on a long leather couch.

“Elena, it's alright, sweetheart.” Anna tries to console me, but I shift my body away from her, attempting to move my legs only to discover they are bound as well. I bring my restrained legs to the floor, aligning myself away from Anna on the couch, and assuming a sitting position. My gaze roams around the room once more and I notice an older man in one of the lounge chairs with a lit cigar in hand while smoke escapes his mouth. His features resemble Anna's—this must be her father. Despite being aware of the Stonewell’s notorious wealth and influence in Traverse City, I refrain from screaming realizing that all her father needs is a wave of his hand for the men who drugged me to silence me. As Anna moves closer on the sofa, she softly strokes my cheek while pushing back some loose strands of hair. She hushes me in a whisper, muttering soothing words into my ear.

"It's alright, darling. You're protected here, with me." I stare at her incredulously as if she has gone mad. Of course, I was not going anywhere when my hands and feet are tied—I’m a prisoner here.

"Anna, let me go home," I beg her yet she continues stroking my cheek without taking any notice of me.

“So, this is the woman you want to spend your whole life with?" Her father's words are laced with sarcasm and then he gives a wave of his hand to a man dressed in a butler's uniform. The employee nods, then goes to the bar and pours a drink for Anna's father. She averts her gaze from me as she glares at him. "No, father, don't." She snaps at him. He emits an audible huff and takes a swig of his beverage, disregarding her protest, but refraining from further provocation.

"Anna, what's going on? I don't get it."

"Just make sure she keeps it down," he orders coldly, "or otherwise I'll have Julian and Enzo take her upstairs with the others. I'm not in the mood to hear her complaints." Her glare intensifies as my tears swell with fear and outrage. Why would she do this? Why won't she let me go?

"We discussed this last night, sweetheart. You said you loved me and I reciprocated," a pleading tone resonates in her voice.

"Do you honestly think I'd leave you now that I know how feel about
